IBAN refers to the standardization of account numbers for international payment transactions that has become necessary in the course of globalization. IBAN stands for International Bank Account Number.

Since January 1, 2006, the use of IBAN and BIC (Bank Identifier Code, also known as SWIFT address) has been mandatory for all cross-border payments in the EU.
